Through Ozzie's eyes

Andy writes it as Ozzie sees it. Ozzie reports on bridges, ramparts, lakes and cable cars with total confidence, and on Andy with less.

Real places, real history

The Fun Facts at the end of each stop cover the real history and culture, from Mostar's Old Bridge to Lake Ohrid's endemic trout.

Everything went wrong, a bit

A sheep in a tunnel, a snake at the water's edge and one very bad night in Serbia. That night comes with a warning other van drivers will want to read.

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

The sheep in the tunnel

The drive really was challenging, all switchbacks and roadside shrines and Andy muttering things I'm not going to repeat about the road surface, plus two more tunnels for good measure, one of which had a sheep standing stock-still in the middle of the carriageway, silhouetted in the headlights like it owned the place.

Andy stood on the brakes. The sheep, after a long, judgemental pause, wandered off at its own pace. I have never in my life felt more kinship with another animal than I did watching that sheep refuse to hurry for anyone.

But Lake Ohrid is worth every wobble. It's one of the oldest lakes on the entire planet, formed over a million years ago, and one of the deepest in Europe too, plunging almost 300 metres in places.
